In Beyond Elpis - Cynicism is a City Motto
After the Tilt, civilization completely crumbled. People reverted back to their more primal selves. What is left now is nothing like before. Structures barely stand, food is scarce at best save for some minimal produce which is near impossible to grow due to lack of proper soil. Where we stand now is Elpis. Lost hope. The people became cold and hard, relying on sheer instinct rather than rational thought. A sense of isolation is apparent not only within the citizens but the city itself. The outside world is a barren wasteland with little resources and even more dangerous than the streets of Elpis. Knowledge is a rare commodity and the ability to read only exists within a few who strive to prepare for future generations. The year is somewhere near 2050.
The sense of isolationism became a reality when the city insulated itself from much of the outside world with it's focus on survival of their own. Every person is for themselves. People no longer hold a vision of the future and simply rely on an attempt to survive. Among them, there are few who hold a vision.
Greed and desperation rule the harsh streets. Life in Elpis is a daily grind that takes on a whole other meaning as with each passing day. Basic commodities like food and water become more valuable than gold and silver ever were. Streets are filled with drug dealers, prostitute’s gangs, and criminals. Elpis now divided into 5 major districts. Once lavish streets are now ruins, filled with criminals.
Corruption is an epidemic that affects not only criminals but police and city officials. It is affecting and infecting everyone, even those with the best of motivations and has become a fast-spreading cancer that has completely consumed life in Elpis. n this type of day to day struggle, there are few are left with a good heart, and even less will openly show it, only after they fatten their own necessities. Life in Elpis is ruled corruption, sex, drugs, and moonshine.
The so-called justice system enforced by Sheriffs and Rangers is known to most as simple vigilantism. While people not completely consumed by corruption may aim to seek justice, they quickly find the system does not function as they'd like, those enforcers are as corrupt as any.
One man took it upon himself to stand at the top of the pile; known simply as 'The Governor', he, along with his group of chosen followers, now hold the city within their clutches; their wretched fingers in every part of what Elpis has become. Factions operate in the background but are engraved in all aspects of current society.
